Legion of Mary

Worldwide Apostolate

The Legion of Mary, a worldwide apostolate founded in Dublin in 1921 is represented in 17 parishes in the diocese. Membership requires attendance at the weekly meeting, daily recitation of the rosary and the legion prayer (the Catena), and service for Christ through Mary in corporal and spiritual works of mercy (2 hours weekly). The LOM sponsors four Marian devotional services a year.

The Legion of Mary is open to all Catholics who:

  • Faithfully practice their religion
  • Are animated by the desire to participate in the Church’s apostolate through membership in the Legion
  • Are prepared to fulfill each and every duty which active membership in the Legion involves

The first step to become a member is to be a guest at a meeting of the Legion of Mary. Guests are always welcome and can go on one of the work assignments with an experienced member if they choose.

There are two types of membership, Active as described above or Auxiliary. Auxiliary membership is open to everyone. It consists of those who are unable to assume the duties of active membership, but who associate themselves with the Legion by undertaking the service of prayer in it’s name. Every Praesidium which has a sense of appreciation of the power of prayer will strive to possess a well-filled roll of auxiliary members. This service consists of the daily recitation from the tessera which is a leaflet containing the prayers of the Legion, and five decades of the Rosary.
