God's Shepherds of Love and Hope
Cancer Care Ministry
The Cancer Care Ministry brings God’s love to parishioners impacted by cancer. You do not have to face a cancer journey alone. Our wish is to help you choose faith over fear.
The Cancer Care Ministers are parishioners of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church who have experienced their cancer journey as patients, caregivers, or, in some cases, both.
Please get in touch with us using the information provided below and let us know how we can support you and your family. We are here not only for the patient but also for spouses and caregivers. We will do our best to meet your request.
Quarterly Rosary of Hope Prayer Service
We pray the Rosary with special intercessional prayers for cancer patients and all those affected by the cancer diagnosis of a loved one. We lift our voices in song with special hymns.
We collect names on petition cards to pray for; petition cards are available in the Narthex before the service. The names are kept private. The petition cards are placed at the altar during the service. Confidentiality is always respected. Dates and times are listed in the weekly bulletin two weeks before each Rosary of Hope service.
Prayer Jars
Prayer jars are offered as a complimentary gift from the Cancer Care Ministry. Each jar is filled with a daily strip that contains a prayer, Scripture verse, or inspirational message. We suggest using the jar for inspiration, individual prayer and meditation, or sharing it with others through phone or text. These jars are available at the quarterly Rosary of Hope or by contacting us directly.
Cards of Encouragement
Our ministry will send a personalized, hand-written card with encouraging words to patients or family members affected by cancer. We pray for the individual as the card is written. Please provide the name and address of the recipient on the cards provided in the Narthex available before the Rosary of Hope or by contacting us directly. The individual does not need to be a member of our parish or live locally. We can also email the individual if preferred.
Support Group
Our Cancer Support Group is a group of parishioners who have been diagnosed with cancer. The group shares stories, hints, and tips for navigating a cancer diagnosis and prays for one another. All parishioners affected by cancer are welcome to join us at any time. There is no commitment required to attend all meetings. The group meets at St. John Center on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of every month (except July and August, when meetings are held only on the 2nd Monday of the month) at 9:30 AM.
Prayer Warriors
Our Cancer Care Ministry prays specific prayers, including the St. Peregrine chaplet, for all those included in the parish prayer chain who are battling cancer. St. Peregrine is the patron saint of cancer patients.
A Cancer Minister will pray with you by phone at a time convenient for you. You may identify yourself or remain anonymous if you prefer. We will pray one decade of the Rosary with you. Contact us to request prayer.
All information regarding a specific individual’s cancer diagnosis that is shared with us is kept confidential.
